Hello! My name is Ian, and I hail from the relatively unknown state of South Carolina in the USA. My hometown, Charleston, has American history and Southern culture everywhere you look, making it a popular tourist destination. Unfortunately, when I tell people in Taiwan where I am from, I am met with blank stares. Now I just say it is north of Florida. I graduated from one of the top-ten public high schools in the nation, Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston, South Carolina, and completed a Bachelor of Arts with High Honors in Religion and English from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. I have been teaching English in Taiwan for almost four years, and I have enjoyed every minute of it!
From my perspective as a teacher, I think English is an interesting yet challenging language to learn, but I understand that students might only see the latter. My goal as an English teacher is to cultivate an interest for learning the language. In other words, to help my students discover what is interesting as well what is challenging. To that end I try to create a friendly, open environment in my classes, and I shower my students with encouragement and positive feedback.
I have taught all ages—kindergarten to adult—and all levels—zero English to practically fluent—and I have developed an ability to address my students’ needs and shortcomings as a result. My particular areas of interest in teaching adults are public speaking, writing (e-mails), grammar, current events, general conversation, and topics related to the humanities (history, literature, philosophy, religion, etc.). I believe I am a conscientious teacher, and I can promise I will work hard to help you improve your English!
